Microcurrent: Toning and Sculpting Treatment

Understanding physiology and application of Microcurrent

The use of microcurrent in medicine and cosmetic improvement has been studied for more than 50 years. Stimulation with microcurrents is also called biostimulation or bioelectric therapy because it encourages cell physiology and growth. Essentially, microcurrent is a low level of electrical current that mirrors the natural current flow of the body. It serves as a noninvasive augmentation of the body’s natural electrophysiology through frequency, polarity balancing, and homeostasis. The effects of microcurrent (electroporation) in clinical medicine have demonstrated acceleration of healing bone tissue, wound healing, muscle rehabilitation, TMJ, tendon repairs, lymphedema, diabetes, and collagen remodeling.

The use of microcurrent facial toning is very acceptable for treating sports injuries, burns, and wounds. It helps the body heal up to 350% faster than not having microcurrent therapy. In 1830, Dr. Carlos Matteucci found that the body sent out electrical charges when it was injured. And by the early 1900s, Dr. Thomas Wing used microcurrent to treat patients with Bell's Palsy and strokes.

Microcurrent helps stimulate the body to manufacture and utilize proteins and nutrients required for optimal cell metabolism and it supports cell homeostasis. Marked improvement is found through increased circulation (lymph-blood), increased adenosine triphosphate synthesis, reduction of inflammation, increased fibroblastic activity, and more. Microcurrent is also beneficial for medical indications such as neuropathy, inflammation, healing (such as in pressure ulcers), stimulating bone repair, or management of pain.

Microcurrent is a noninvasive, and subsensory therapeutic treatment that delivers direct pulsed current in the millions of an amp called a microamp. It is subsensory, meaning it is normally not felt because the current is delivered in microamperage and is not able to incite nerve response. Instead it impacts biological activity. It also does not cause muscles to jump.

Microcurrent Facial

The human body has its own natural energy and current. Microcurrent (which means mild electrical) uses this low-level electrical current (up to 640 microamperes) to re-educate the facial muscles. The electrical current used for this facial is almost the same as your own body’s bio-electrical field. The microcurrent facial works in harmony with the body.

If you have skin with fine lines, wrinkles, decreased elasticity or sun damaged, muscle lifting treatment can restore a more youthful appearance. It will give the facial muscles and skin a “workout” that stimulates collagen and elastin.

A microcurrent facial is a non-surgical face lift.

Benefits include:

  • Increases the production of collagen and elastin

  • Visibly firms and contours, lifting the overall droop

  • Energizes the cell, increases mitochondria activity

  • Hydrates and revitalizes skin, making it smoother and softer

  • Improves blood circulation and lymphatic drainage

  • Rejuvenates the “pink glow” of youthful hues

  • Reduces the appearance of stretch marks & cellulite on the body

  • Reduces scarring and dimpling from laser resurfacing

  • Reduces dark circles or puffiness under eyes

  • Reduces symptoms of Sinusitis, Rhinitis, and Rosacea

  • Reduction of acne scars.

Results

Results are dependent upon age, health, lifestyle, and amount of accumulative skin damage. Be aware that it does take patience to repair and improve the skin which may involve several months. A home-care regimen is mandatory in order to provide optimum results. Years of sun exposure, smoking, alcohol, poor dietary habits, and overall lifestyle can compromise the skin barrier or its ability to repair. Systemic diseases and medications may also alter results or be contraindicative for treatment.

How many sessions?

The concept that adenosine triphosphate can be stored is a valid reason for performing a series of sessions whereby there is a re-education process of muscle tissue. Perform a minimum of two times week (48 -72 hours in between each treatment) for about 10 to18 sessions. The effectiveness of microcurrent is accumulative and, therefore, requires consistent sessions during the initial program. It is like exercising – one session a week is not going to provide much benefit. After the series, reassess the results. A monthly top-up treatment is then recommended to maintain results. It’s just like going to the gym for a body workout. If you stop, the results will gradually return to how they were before treatments commenced. Normally, a once a month regular maintenance treatment with the microcurrent is a good practice.

The main concern is the high frequency may heat the metal parts in the body. And, this will result in heating the tissues surrounding the metal. The result could easily be damaging the surrounding tissues.

Note: please read microcurrent contraindications below before making your appointment.
